Cheeditha is a small Aboriginal community located not far from Roebourne in Western Australia's Pilbara region.
In 1975, all Aboriginal people were forced to relocate to Roebourne. However, instead of settling in town amidst its challenges, a group of elders chose to camp in the old woolshed buildings at Mt Welcome Station, situated just south of Roebourne.
By 1985, with support from the WA Government, homes were constructed, leading to the development of a thriving community from these modest beginnings.
Yesterday & Today
Art creation in Roebourne traces its roots back to the Cheeditha community. In 2002, the Bujee Nhoor-Pu project was established in the historic Galbraith Store at Cossack, facilitating the production and sale of artworks.
The success of the Bujee Nhoor-Pu project resonated throughout the wider Roebourne community, leading these pioneering artists to form several independent art groups that showcase the region's cultural diversity.
The revitalized Cheeditha Art Group embraces the legacy of those early artists, with many current practitioners being descendants of the original founders. Over fifty percent of each sale is directed back to the artist, while the remainder supports the Cheeditha Art Group in launching new projects and enhancing the livelihoods of local residents.
